Headaches are one of the most common health complaints, affecting many people in the Spruce Grove and Stony Plain area. While many headaches are occasional and mild, others can become frequent, severe, and disruptive to work, family life, and daily activities. Migraines and chronic headaches can significantly impact quality of life, making it difficult to concentrate, sleep, or participate in normal activities.

Although headaches are often thought of as a single condition, there are actually many different types of headaches, each with its own causes and treatment options.

Headache & Migraine Care

  • Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. They often cause a dull, aching pain or a sensation of tightness around the forehead, temples, or back of the head. Muscle tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back is frequently associated with tension headaches.

    Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headaches originate from problems in the neck. Restricted joints, muscle tension, poor posture, or previous injuries can refer pain into the head, causing headaches that often start at the base of the skull and travel toward the forehead or behind the eyes.

    Migraines

Migraines are a neurological condition that typically causes moderate to severe head pain, often on one side of the head. Symptoms may include nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, visual disturbances, and dizziness. Migraine attacks can last for hours or even days and can significantly interfere with daily activities.

  • Headaches can develop for many reasons, including:

    • Muscle tension and stress

    • Poor posture

    • Neck joint dysfunction

    • Previous injuries, including whiplash

    • Sleep disturbances

    • Dehydration

    • Hormonal changes

    • Certain foods or medications

    • Neurological or medical conditions

Because headaches can have many different causes, obtaining an accurate diagnosis is essential before beginning treatment.

  • Many headaches have a musculoskeletal component involving the joints, muscles, and nerves of the neck and upper back. Chiropractors are trained to assess these structures and identify whether they may be contributing to a patient's symptoms.

Research suggests that chiropractic care may be beneficial for certain types of headaches, particularly cervicogenic headaches and some tension-type headaches. Treatment may include spinal manipulation, joint mobilization, soft tissue therapy, posture correction, exercise recommendations, and ergonomic advice.

Several clinical studies have found that patients with neck-related headaches may experience reductions in headache frequency, intensity, and disability following chiropractic treatment. Current evidence suggests that addressing dysfunction in the cervical spine can be an effective component of a comprehensive headache management plan.

Every patient is different, however, and the most appropriate treatment depends on the underlying cause of the headache.

Comprehensive Assessment and Referral When Needed

One of the most important aspects of chiropractic care is not simply treatment—chiropractors are trained to diagnose the type of headache you have.

Chiropractors undergo extensive university-level education in anatomy, neurology, orthopedics, diagnosis, imaging, and clinical examination. This training allows chiropractors to evaluate whether a headache is likely related to muscles, joints, posture, or other musculoskeletal factors.

Equally important, chiropractors are trained to recognize "red flags" that may indicate a more serious medical condition requiring further investigation. Certain headache symptoms may warrant referral to a family physician, neurologist, emergency department, or diagnostic imaging.

At our clinic, patient safety always comes first. If your examination suggests that your headache may be caused by something other than a musculoskeletal problem, we will discuss our findings with you and ensure you are referred to the appropriate healthcare provider.

  • If you are experiencing frequent headaches, migraines, neck-related headaches, or persistent head pain, a chiropractic assessment can help identify possible contributing factors. By understanding the source of your symptoms, we can determine whether chiropractic treatment may help or whether additional medical investigation is needed.

Our goal is to help you find answers, reduce pain, and get back to living your life with fewer headaches and better overall health
